چکیده

An 85-year-old man with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer was hospitalized because of seizures. Brain computed tomography (CT) scan showed air densities in the branches of left middle cerebral artery (Picture 1A), and diffusionweighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple high-intensity signals in the both cerebral hemispheres (Picture 1B). Chest contrast-enhanced CT scan indicated a necrotic tumor with cavities in the right lung (Picture 1C). The patient was diagnosed as cerebral air embolism associated with advanced lung cancer, because no other embolic source could be found. It was speculated that air flowed into the pulmonary vessels, which had necrotic tumor with cavities, when intrathoracic pressure was elevated by cough, straining, or stooping. It has been previously reported that cerebral air embolism can be complicated by invasive procedures such as needle biopsy (1). However, the present patient had no invasive treatments, suggesting that cerebral air embolism is a rare but noteworthy complication of advanced lung cancer with necrotic cavities.

Fatal cerebral air embolism related to an air flight.

A patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease developed a cough, loss of consciousness, and convulsions during an air flight. Chest radiography showed a large lung bulla. Computed tomography of the brain showed intraparenchymal air and bilateral cerebral infarcts. The findings were compatible with cerebral air embolism, most likely predisposed to by lung bulla and an air flight. The unde...

Fatal cerebral air embolism following uneventful flexible bronchoscopy.

Flexible bronchoscopy is a widely used and safe procedure with a reported maximal mortality rate of 0.04% and a major-complications rate of 0.5%. There are, however, only few case descriptions for postinterventional cerebral air embolism and the frequency of this supposedly rare complication is unknown. The current study presents 2 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who suffered fatal cer...

Acute cerebral arterial embolism following pemetrexed and carboplatin treatment in non-small-cell lung cancer: A case report

Thromboembolism is a known vascular toxicity associated with tumor chemotherapy. The combination of pemetrexed and carboplatin has exhibited significant antitumor activity, with mild manageable toxicity in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), whereas cerebral arterial embolism has not been recognized as a side effect associated with this regimen. This is the case report of...

Massive Ischemic Stroke Due to Pulmonary Barotrauma and Cerebral Artery Air Embolism During Commercial Air Travel

BACKGROUND Air embolism into the systemic arterial circulation secondary to pulmonary barotrauma has rarely been reported. Herein, we report the clinical course of an extremely rare presentation of cerebral air embolism likely due to ruptured pulmonary bullae during commercial air travel. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old man suddenly became unconscious during an airplane descent. Upon landing, he was ...

Cerebral air embolism associated with penetrating lung injury: a case report and review of the literature

CASE A 44-year-old man intentionally stabbed himself in the anterior neck and left thorax with a fruit knife. Physical examination revealed two open wounds entering the thoracic cavity in the front chest, and a stab wound entering the trachea at the neck. Two chest tubes were initially inserted for the left lung injury with open hemopneumothorax. Nevertheless, the worsening oxygenation required...
